Growing up, I always had the same plan for my future down to the nitty-gritty details. The only challenge was working my way up to live that dream life – but I knew somehow, I would get to where I wanted to be with no problem. Others have no idea what their future holds, which is perfectly normal. I was so strict with myself, not allowing me to stray away from my plan. Of course, once I entered Penn State and took notice of all the opportunities in the Bellisario College of Communications, my plan was thrown off. I faced rejection numerous times, and also had many doors open for me. The number of roadblocks I’ve faced in the past three years is challenging, but I’ve also had many triumphs. The life I thought I had planned out for myself quickly got derailed once I began my college career. I broadened my horizons to new clubs, like HVC. I received many A’s in classes, but also a C here and there. I felt like one grade would be the defining factor of my career – which is silly to even think about now. I realized that sometimes these adversities happen no matter how hard you try.
Feeling my future plans changing was unnerving for me, considering I’ve wanted the same career since I was a child, and apparently nothing could get in the way of that. However, the challenges are a positive factor in my life, and I find myself constantly being reminded that change is a good thing. Whether it be switching my major when it feels like it is too late, or not feeling like I have enough internships under my belt compared to other students, or not getting into a specific club I wanted to be a part of – these things happen so that I can be fitted for whatever future career path I will hold.
Occasionally, I force myself to step back and remember that my career and lifestyle will work out for me in time. As students, we often get ahead of ourselves. In the competitiveness in both college and the workplace, it is easy to lose sight of yourself and your goals. It is also easy to compare your work and academic status to those who are better than us. There will always be someone ahead of you, but focusing on only that, and not your own work or self, is the defining factor that leads you to a downfall.
Taking breaks during the semester is a necessity. Often, we work ourselves so hard in class and extracurriculars because we are so scared of not reaching the goal of success once we graduate. By doing something as small as putting the books away for an hour and taking a walk to get fresh air, or even grabbing coffee with a friend, we can balance the busy schedule of our lives and clear our minds. There will always be work to get done but reminding yourself that everything will somehow work itself out, is enough to keep me going when stressing about my future.
