Professional Student Organizations

Written by Ashley Hayford, Director of University Relations

Penn State is known across the country for its alumni network, student resources and renowned faculty. In fact, these factors were the reason why myself and many others found ourselves coming to the university. In particular, the acclaimed resources and faculty in the Bellisario College of Communications were the reason why Penn State became my second choice. While these qualities about Penn State and my college still ring true, there’s one quality I feel I overlooked.

When you go on an incoming student tour at Penn State, you’re always told how many clubs there are here and how peculiar they are. You’re told about Cheese Club or the Bob Club, but there’s one group of organizations tour guides don’t share much about: professional student organizations.

The career-focused student-run organizations at Penn State have taught me more than most of my classes and internships I’ve ever had. I haven’t just learned more about my aspirations or the elements of my desired field in these meetings and at these events. I’ve learned more about myself professionally and mentally.

For instance, the professional development skills I’ve learned from my peers alone in HVC is something that will stick with me for life. I know how to do presentations without feeling scared anymore. I know how to dress for a professional meeting or event. I know how to talk and act during an interview. All of these and more are skills I attribute to HVC, not classes.

Until the day I leave Penn State and the decades following my graduation, I will always tell those who are career-oriented and interested in growing their ambitions early on to go to this university. Join as many professional development clubs until you know what you’ll love to do for the rest of your life. When you join clubs like HVC, the opportunities to learn and grow as a person and professional are endless.
